Past Events
In fall of 2009, C.A.P.A. and its affiliates, the Parent to Parent Network (P2PN), the Orange Schools PTAs, worked together to bring actor John Morello to three locations throughout Cuyahoga County.
On Sept. 21, the students at Brecksville- Broadview Heights High school experienced firsthand the impact of substance use through Morello's performance entitled, "DIRT."
Students know the statistics associated with substance use and abuse but they have a hard time associating it with their own choices or behaviors. DIRT exposed the students to the consequences of substance use through the experiences of the individual characters providing the opportunity for introspection and honest dialogue. Many of the teachers integrated the lesson across the curriculum and had Mr. Morello attend their classrooms. A repeat performance occurred in the evening and was well attended by parents, students and community members.
Afterward, John stayed and answered questions from audience members. As John discussed the personal impact of substance abuse on his own family and life, a parent asked what, if anything, could have made a difference with his personal choice to use. He responded, "If I had got caught using when I was a kid." He encouraged the parents in the audience to have open dialogue with their children about alcohol and drug use; letting them know early on that that the expectation is that they not use. Most important, to listen.
Go to DIRT is coming to the Brecksville-Broadview Heights area to read a Sun Star Courier article on the event.
In spring of 2009, audiences listened to the viewpoints of both mother and son, Chris Volkman and Toren Volkman, author's of the book, "From Binge to Blackout": A Mother and Son struggle with Teen Drinking". Together they tell a riveting, enlightening, and heartbreakingly true story of a family that was able to confront the fear, pain, and denial that threatened to destroy them - and survive the epidemic of teenage drinking.

In October 2008, C.A.P.A., in conjunction with the Partnership for a Healthy Community, Parent 2 Parent Network and the Orange Schools Foundation, brought in nationally-renowned publisher and co-author Judith Galbriath.
Galbraith is the founder of Free Spirit Publishing, which focus's on creating self-help material for young people.
